The evanescent Master Plan...

as life itself... A metaphor for the ephemeral legacy of the American Dream by Chad Wright

«I was raised in Orange County—a sprawling suburb of Southern California built by disciples of Levittown. We lived in a tract house, a symbol of the American Dream, just like our neighbors. (...)We spent our summers in Breezy Point, New York, (...). As children, my big brother Christopher and I would build cities in the sand, beneath the bungalow’s slatted porch floorboards.
In a series titled Master Plan, I am conflating a child’s sandcastle with architecture typifying postwar American suburbia. This three-part series culls artifacts from my childhood, investigating suburbia in its vision and legacy.Phase One focuses on the mass-produced tract house, re-examining it as symbol for the model American Dream.»

one million bones...

One Million Bones is a large-scale social arts practice and public installations to raise awareness of ongoing genocides and mass atrocities in places like Sudan, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, SomaliaBurma and SyriaFor the past three years The Art of Revolution have been collecting 1,000,000 handcrafted bones for a three-day installation event on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., June 8-10, 2013. The bones were laid out as a striking simbol of our common humanity. Each bone represented a call to action, a story and a voice. Thousands of volunteers, dressed in white, have created a powerful and visible symbolic mass grave:

the anti-social media...

Hell is other people the anti-social experiment by Scott GarnerUsing FourSquare, this site will track your "friends" and calculate optimally distanced locations for avoiding them.

"This is a short trailer of sorts for a walk that I did based on my Hell is Other People app, which calculates locations to help you avoid your friends. It didn't go exactly as planned, but the results are fairly funny." S.Garner.

'ballooning' internet for everyone...

Google's Project Loon

Project Loon is a network of balloons traveling on the edge of space, designed to connect people in rural and remote areas, help fill coverage gaps, and bring people back online after disasters.

Project Loon balloons travel around 20 km above the Earth’s surface in the stratosphere. Winds in the stratosphere are generally steady and slow-moving at between 5 and 20 mph, and each layer of wind varies in direction and magnitude. Project Loon uses software algorithms to determine where its balloons need to go, then moves each one into a layer of wind blowing in the right direction. By moving with the wind, the balloons can be arranged to form one large communications network.

The Project Loon pilot test begins June 2013 on the 40th parallel south. Thirty balloons, launched from New Zealand’s South Island, will beam Internet to a small group of pilot testers. The experience of these pilot testers will be used to refine the technology and shape the next phase of Project Loon.

pendulum choir...

Pendulum choir has received the Golden Nica 2013 at the Interactive Art Category

Pendulum Choir is an original choral piece for 9 A Cappella voices and 18 hydraulic jacks. The choir stands on tilting platforms, constituting a living, sonorous body. That body expresses itself through various physical states. Its plasticity varies at the mercy of its sonority. It varies between abstract sounds, repetitive sounds, and lyrical or narrative sounds. The bodies of the singers and their voices play with and against gravity. They brush and avoid each other creating subtle vocal polyphonies. Or, supported by electronic sounds, they break their cohesion and burst into lyrical flight or fold up into an obsessional and dark ritual. The organ travels from life to death in a robotic allegory where the technological complexity and the lyricism of the moving bodies combine into a work with Promethean accents.

Conception, construction and musical composition: Michel Décosterd and André Décosterd

Interpretation: Jeune Opéra Copagnie – Les voix

Direction: Nicolas Farine
Tenors: Wolfgang Behrenz, Alain Bertschy, Michel Mülhauser
Baritones: Davide Autieri, Sacha Michon, Christophe Gindraux
Basses: Francesco Biamonte, Michael Kreis, Christophe Mironneau
Technical collaboration: Jacques Décosterd, François Bommottet

Within the continuum of our researches, the idea of creating a moving choir came from our intention to instigate a relation between movement and sound that was as close fitting and natural as possible. In Pendulum Choir, the mechanical set up engenders physical constraints on the singers and, as a consequence, on their way of singing. This creates new and unexpected sonorities, a plastic parameter that we decided to incorporate in the musical writing. Similarly, we sought to include phenomena due to gravity, gravity forces, and acceleration forces on the singers. These phenomena are well known in mechanics but still foreign to musical compositions. The concept of a mass of sonorous and moving human bodies, going through a natural distortion under the effect of physical forces brings to mind a living organ.

When you're in a relationship that is stuck at it's lowest point. The days are so long. But you have no desire for it to change. You get used to it and you accept it.»

I get up in the evening
and I ain't got nothing to say
I come home in the morning
I go to bed feeling the same way
I ain't nothing but tired
Man I'm just tired and bored with myself
Hey there baby, I could use just a little help

You can't start a fire
You can't start a fire without a spark
This gun's for hire
even if we're just dancing in the dark

Message keeps getting clearer
radio's on and I'm moving 'round the place
I check my look in the mirror
I wanna change my clothes, my hair, my face
Man I ain't getting nowhere
I'm just living in a dump like this
There's something happening somewhere
baby I just know that there is

You can't start a fire
you can't start a fire without a spark
This gun's for hire
even if we're just dancing in the dark

You sit around getting older
there's a joke here somewhere and it's on me
I'll shake this world off my shoulders
come on baby this laugh's on me

Stay on the streets of this town
and they'll be carving you up alright
They say you gotta stay hungry
hey baby I'm just about starving tonight
I'm dying for some action
I'm sick of sitting 'round here trying to write this book
I need a love reaction
come on now baby give me just one look

You can't start a fire sitting 'round crying over a broken heart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
You can't start a fire worrying about your little world falling apart
This gun's for hire
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
Even if we're just dancing in the dark
